In morning meeting we have started a series called Superflex, where Superflex helps kids defeat the Unthinkables that might try and make them behave is a not so positive manner. Last week we learned about Glassman, who makes you overreact to tiny problems. We talked a lot about different strategies to defeat Glassman, as well as compared what would be considered a big or small problem. This week we will continue that book, and also refresh what respect looks like and sounds like in the classroom.
In reading we are starting a story called Owl Moon. We will be focusing on the skills of making predictions, identifying text structure, using similies, and contractions. We will also continue our unit 2 inquiry on Friday. The kids came up with some great research questions last week, and I'm excited to get going with the research!
In math on Friday we started multiplication! We start very basic so that we have strategies to build upon. So last week we talked about multiplication as equal groups, see if your kiddo can show you an example of equal groups and how to write a multiplication sentence for an extra $20 (just write their example in their planner, they should have a drawing of equal groups and the multiplication sentence or equation)!! This week we are building upon that further to learn about multiplication as repeated addition (3+3+3 is the same as 3x3). We will also learn how to use a number line as a strategy and how to problem solve with multiplication. We will end the week learning about array's. An array has the same number of objects in each row, here is an example. This array has 5 rows of 4, so the multiplication sentence would be 5x4.
Last week we started Project Lead the Way, or PLTW. Our first module is on the science of flight. We learned about balanced and unbalanced forces, here are a couple pictures I took before my camera died.
This week in science we will be learning about the 4 forces of flight. In social studies we will be continuing to work on our Billings brochures, and we are tying in some opinion writing with getting the kids to write about the best things about Billings.
I will be gone on Wednesday to go up to West High and shadow a principal there. This will be my last time gone for this semester. Mrs. McKenzie will be my guest teacher again, and she is great! I thank you for your understanding with missing these days, I truly struggle with leaving the kids.
