In reading this week we will start our first unit of Lead21. Our theme question is: How do the changes around us make us who we are? We will focus on the skill of determining important information. We will also meet with our first inquiry groups this week and practice working together as a team.
We just got a new math series this year called Go Math! I am pretty excited to get started with it! The kids have booklets that all their independent practice pages are in, so you won't see math papers come home until the end of each chapter. In math this week we will learn about the identity property of addition (adding zero) and the commutative property of addition (order property 4+5=5+4). We will end the week practicing estimating sums.
In social studies we will be discovering where in the world our community is, and in science we will start first with learning about the water cycle before jumping into Project Lead The Way later this year.
Homework (will come home in Tuesday folder): addition and subtraction review, read 15 minutes every night, September poem (this is an acrostic poem and we will do one for every month, we try to write a sentence starting with each letter).
Spelling words will be up under the spelling tab, we will have our first spelling test this Friday. On Friday we will also take the SRI (Scholastic Reading Inventory) just to get a feel for our beginning of the year reading level. We will take this test every quarter to see growth.
I will post on the blog each weekend to let you know what is happening for the week. This year I am going to try to post by Friday, but I will definitely always have it up by Sunday. I also put a code word (or phrase) at the end of each post and if your kiddo writes that down for me by Tuesday of each week I'll give them an extra $20. This is just a bonus for checking the blog and being in the know for what will be happening each week!
Coming up the week of Sept. 8th we have our fall NWEA testing. In 3rd grade we take the NWEA test in the fall and spring to see student growth throughout the year. Our class is scheduled to take the test Wednesday Sept. 9th-Friday Sept. 11 from 8:30-10 each morning. Please try to have your kiddo there those days so that we don't have to worry about make-up testing.
I hope you all had a great weekend! I spent the weekend with family and Saturday we worked with a crew to help build Trails End Park near Burlington Elementary! It was an awesome process and so neat to see the community come together!!
Last week we celebrated Tiffany's birthday and this week we are celebrating McHugh's birthday and Julia's birthday!!
Sorry this post was so long, it is not normally this length!! Have a great week!!
