In math this week we will be looking at estimating sums and differences, as well as learning about over and underestimates. We will be talking about the reasonableness of answers. Check out this video for a little idea of what we will be doing this week!
This week in reading we will be reviewing the skills we have learned the last 3 weeks (visualization, categorize and classify, using similes, using dictionaries and using analogies) and rereading Discovering the Story of Earth and Boy We Were Wrong About Dinosaurs.
In math this week we will be looking at estimating sums and differences, as well as learning about over and underestimates. We will be talking about the reasonableness of answers. Check out this video for a little idea of what we will be doing this week! In science this week we will get to hear from some presenters about the upcoming science fair. In social studies we will continue learning about immigration. For writing we will continue our persuasive advertisements and also start descriptive essays. When we write descriptive essays we are trying to write using our senses, we want people to feel like they were there! Homework this week is addition and subtraction practice page, reading log with summary, multip Coming up this spring we will be taking the SmarterBalanced assessment. Soon we will be going over practice tests in class, but if you would like a chance to see what the tests will be like you can try them for yourself and even have you kiddo try them at home. Click here for the sample test.

On Tuesday we welcome a new student to our class, the kids are so excited to meet him!! In reading this week we are continuing to learn about the story of Earth. Our focus question is: what role do humans play in the story of Earth? We will be reading stories about geologists and archeologists and how they study Earth to find out about its past. We will be using the skills of visualizing, categorizing and classifying, and using similes. In math we will continue to work on our multiplication and division facts and at the end of the week we will start multiplying by multiples of 10. In writing we will finish up our persuasive advertisements and start a descriptive essay where we will be looking into word choice and using descriptive adjectives. Homework this week: Multiplication and Division review, reading log with summary, and multiplication flash card practice. Please take 5 minutes to look at this survey about fundraising for Arrowhead school, it is only 3 questions. Thank you!! https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/X6BCDHM Have a great week and report cards will come home on Thursday. Sorry that I am getting this post up so late, I don't know where the weekend went!!
In reading this week we will be looking in to the role water plays in the story of Earth. We will be focusing on the skills of making connections, making analogies, and distinguishing fact from opinion. We we also review contractions. In math we are finishing up the quarter with some more multiplication and division problem solving and some review of addition, subtraction, and area. We will be reassessing many of the standards we studied this quarter, just as a final check!! In writing we are finishing up our planet reports and starting a persuasive advertisement. The kids will get to pick a product, real or made up, and write a paragraph trying to convince me to purchase their product. They will then get to make a poster or "ad" for their product. In science we are continuing our study of the moon and looking into how much we would weigh on the moon. In social studies we are starting a unit on immigration, but taking a brief pause on Thursday to honor Martin Luther King Jr. as Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. day. Homework this week will include a multiplication and division review page, reading log with summary, and multiplication fact practice (should be done every night). The end of the quarter is on Friday. There is no school on Monday the 20th and report cards will go home on Thursday the 23rd. Wow, 2014!! I hope everyone had a wonderful New Year's Eve and day! Check our your kiddo's resolutions/goals for the year at KidBlog. Remember you can respond to their posts as a guest and I am sure they would love that!!
In reading this week we are starting a new unit, Digging up a Story. This week we will be focusing on the question: What do we learn when we look below Earth's surface? The vocabulary words we will be discussing are layer, fossil, and trickle. The skills we will focus on this week include: how to use a dictionary, fact and opinion, prefixes telling number (uni-, mon-, bi-, multi-, di-, tri-), and making connections (text-text, text-self, text-world). In math this week we will be focusing on determining the unknown whole number in a multiplication or division equation (standard 3.OA.4). For example, determine the unknown number that makes the equation true in each: 8xn=48, 5=n÷3, 6x6=n. We will also be looking at applying the properties as strategies to multiply and divide (standard 3.OA.5). For example we know that because of the commutative property 3x4 is the same as 4x3. 3x5x2 can be found by 3x5=15, then 15x2=30, or by 5x2=10, they 3x10=30 (associative property). Knowing that 8x5=40 and 8x2=16, one can find 8x7 by using the distributive property 8x(5x2)=(8x5)+(8x2). We just learned a new math game called Spiral. Have your kiddo teach it to you, it would be great to play at home as a family. Here are the rules: 1. Build a spiral game board with all 52 cards, face up. Start in the center and work your way out. 2. Players each select a place marker and place it in the center of the spiral on the very first card. 3. Each player takes a turn rolling the die. They must multiply the number of the die times the value of the card they are on. If they are correct, they may move ahead the number on the die. If incorrect, they many not move. Ace = 1, jack, queen, and king are 10 (harder version would be 11, 12) 4. If a player lands on the same card as another player, they may send the other player back to start. 5. The first player to make it past the last card wins. (or decide they have to land exactly on last card) In science we are learning about the moon this week. We will be doing an investigation into the moon's size compared to Earth's size, as well as learning about craters. The kids will also be continuing their planet reports during writing. In social studies the kids are finishing up brochures all about Montana. We researched about Montana's physical geography, natural resources, and climate. The kids also included Montana's state bird, tree, and flower. Have a great week!! |
All About Me
This school year will mark my seventh year of teaching and I must say I am so blessed to be a part of such a great community at Arrowhead school. I am excited to begin a new year with a wonderful group of kids!! I grew up in Helena and attended college in Bozeman, MT at MSU. Go Bobcats! While there I obtained a degree in Elementary Education and a minor in Reading. In 2016 I received a masters degree in Education Leadership. Six years ago I married my high school sweetheart, Tymon. We also have a five year old adorable mini australian shepherd puppy, Molly. This year we are also welcoming our first child in February and we are so excited to be parents! When I am not teaching I love to be outside enjoying hiking trails or taking in a sporting event. CategoriesArchives
