In reading this week we will look into the essential question: Why do people immigrate to new places? We will focus on the skills of making predictions, theme, and using similes. We will continue working on our inquiry project about floods. In writing we will finish up our personal narratives and have a chance to share them at author's chair. Later in the week we will start writing a "How-To" paper.
In math this week we will continue working on multiplication strategies. Right now we are just giving the kids a background and soon we will start working on each factor and memorizing our multiplication facts. This week we will also learn about the commutative property and to multiply with 1 and 0. We will end the week with our chapter 3 test.
On Monday I'll introduce a fun optional homework assignment called Everyday Arrays. A paper will come home in Tuesday folders as well, but here is what the project entails.
An array shows objects in equal rows. I want you to find 3 to 5 examples of arrays around your house. Take a picture if you can so we can share them on Friday (parents can email me the pictures too so you don’t have to print them). If you can’t take a picture, please draw the array and tell us where you found it. Then write the multiplication sentence that goes with your array. Use the example below.
Here is an example: Eggs in a carton are an array. This array shows 2 rows of 6, so 2x6=12
