Last week the kids presented their inquiry research on floods. Check out their presentations under the "Student Work" tab (it will be posted soon)!
In reading this week we will be looking into the question: What makes different animals unique? We will focus on the skills of visualizing, problem and solution, and synonyms. We will also be learning about action verbs. In writing this week we are trying to finish up our how to writing and hopefully begin some opinion writing.
In math this week we are working on solving for the unknown and multiplying by multiples of 10. We will also take the chapter 5 test this week. Now is a great time to start practicing multiplication facts at home with flash cards or a multiplication game. We will be starting our fact fluency next week.
With it now being second trimester we are starting our chapter book challenge. This is my way to encourage the kids to read more chapter books, and it is optional. I talked to the kids about reading books at their level, or at least close it it. I linked lexile.com on our "Cool Websites" tab for you to help look up the lexile level of books (just so you know, sometimes it seems that the lexile they give is a little high, so if you kiddo is reading the book without trouble then they are fine). For every book the kids finish they will fill out a summary sheet that they can get here at school. Then for every 5 chapter books the kids read they get to sign a challenge sign we have in the room and when they get to 10 books I'll order them a book from the book order (for $5 or less). Reading every night at home is such a great way to help the kids improve their reading and I hope this helps as well!!
- A little side note on the chapter book challenge: I know that some kids will be reading larger chapter books due to their lexile level. Because of that, every 200 pages counts as a chapter book. So if they read a 400 page book it can count as 2 chapter books for the challenge. It they read a 300 page book it still only counts as 1 chapter book.
