This week I will be gone on Monday and Tuesday and Anna Hanna will be my guest teacher. I will be at West High subbing for one of the Dean's there, so I am nervous and excited for the experience.
Thursday will be our Valentine's day party from 10:45-11:45 and it is also an early dismissal at noon. The kids can start bringing in their Valentine's day boxes on Wednesday the 10th, they can also bring in their Valentine's to hand out at this time. There is no school on Friday the 12th or Monday the 15th, enjoy the short break!!
This week in reading we will be starting our next unit in Lead21: Heroes Across Time. This is one of my favorite units, and the kids tend to love it too! During this unit the kids will get the chance to choose a famous hero to research. At the end of their research project we will be doing a Wax Museum where the kids get the chance to dress up as their person, write a speech, and perform it. I have told the kids to start thinking and brainstorming heroes, but not to get set on one just yet because I have not had the chance to fully introduce the project yet. In reading this week we will focus on the skills of determining important information and using antonyms.
In writing this week we will actually be using our writing time to finish up our Unit 4 inquiry projects to be ready to present by Thursday at the latest. On Wednesday we will begin our heroes project and hopefully start researching.
In math this week we will be working on dividing by 9, division problem solving, and order of operations. We won't be doing our week 6 fact memorization because of the short week, but please keep practicing multiplication at home!
In science last week we started our PLTW unit on simple machines. This week the kids will get the chance to explore their simple machine kits and try to create a model using a wheel and axle that could carry a load.
Upcoming Events:
- Box Tops for Education: due Friday, February 19th (if you have some at home please send them in)
- Field Trip to the airport Tuesday, February 23rd. The permission slip will come home in Tuesday folders this week. Our class will be going from 9:15-11:00 and we get to go to the Rocky Mountain College hanger at the airport to see the airplanes that they have. The kids will also get the chance to hear from a pilot about the forces of flight and connect it back to our PLTW unit on flight.
Homework: No homework this week due to the break, but please read every night!!
