In reading this week we are starting Unit 4. The big idea this unit is: What are different ways to meet challenges? We are going to stretch this week into two weeks, since we have two short weeks. Our essential question for the next couple weeks is: What choices are good for us? We will work on the skills of asking and answering questions, author's point of view, and root words. In writing this week we will finish up our book reviews and share them in author's chair. Since we are stretching the week out we will also be stretching the spelling words out. We will study the words for two weeks and take the test next Friday the 17th.
In math this week we are learning how to compare fractions. We will work on comparing them using fractions tiles and then we will learn how to compare them if they have the same numerator or same denominator. This is our last week of the multiplication memorization. Our last 6 problems are: 4x3, 2x9, 7x5, 8x6, 4x4, 5x2. Even though this is our last week, please keep practicing facts at home! It is so helpful and important!! Last week we took the chapter 8 fractions test. It was a very tough test and we went over them on Friday. I spoke with the kids about how I am not too concerned if they had a hard time with the story problems because we really don't focus on those as 3rd grade standards. We will still continue to work on them, but we are more interested in how they can do with identifying fractions and working with fractions on a number line.
This week is a short week. We have an early dismissal on Thursday at noon. Then there is no school on Friday or Monday. Our Valentine's day party will be on Thursday from 10:30-11:45. Please remember that if you choose to bring Valentine's to exchange you need to bring them for the whole class. We have 27 students. Please also try and stay away from anything with peanuts as we have a couple nut allergies. You can bring in your Valentine's day box or bag on Wednesday if you'd like, you may also bring in Valentine's on Wednesday to begin handing out. If you can't bring them Wednesday that is ok, just be sure to bring everything by Thursday!
P.E. this week will be on Tuesday because of the Valentine's day party. Please remember to bring gym shoes on Tuesday!
