In reading this week we are finishing up our unit on heroes. We will spend a lot of the week practicing for the wax museum. We will also focus on the skills of summarizing, identifying antonyms, using context clues, using descriptive language, and we will review comparatives and superlatives.
In writing we will finish our hero reports and speeches. Later in the week we will start our next writing project of writing a story. Within our story we will learn about using dialogue.
In math we are continuing to learn about fractions. This week we are working on equivalent fractions again and learning how to compare fractions with the same denominator and then the same numerator. See if your kiddo can tell you a fraction that is equivalent to 1/2 or 1 whole and I'll give them an extra $10 if you write that fraction in their planner.
In social studies this week we are finishing learning about students around the world and comparing and contrasting our lives. In science we are learning about simple machines. This week we will learn about 6 simple machines and start exploring how to build some of them with our new kits! Our problem that needs to be solved this unit is helping a tiger get out of the moat that it has fallen into. The kids will have to build a simple machine to lift the tiger out. I am looking forward to this, it should be fun!
This week is Dr. Seuss week. To honor the great author we are having dress up days that correlate with one of his books. Here are the dress up days for the week:
- Monday: Hat day
- Tuesday: Crazy socks day
- Wednesday: Animal Prints
- Thursday: Crazy combination of shoes day (2 different pairs of shoes)
- Friday: Wear black, white, and red to honor The Cat in the Hat!
I told the kids I would love them to have their costumes to school by Wednesday, but some have told me theirs won't be quite ready and that's ok. I just wanted to make sure that we all have them. I would like them to bring their costumes, or all that they can on Friday for sure. We are doing a dress rehearsal of our wax museum Friday morning with Mrs. Risser's first grade class. Then our heroes will come to life on Monday, March 9th from 8:30-9:00 for all the parents to see. I really hope you can make it and see your kiddos hard work!!
Homework: Reading log, multiplication and division practice, March poem
Code Word: Heroes
